a smattering of various subjects

I saw a woman at Starbucks this morning that gave me an idea of what life will look like for me in 10 years. She was a cheerful, petite woman who was there with her 8 or 9 year old son. What made me think of myself was that, at the age of 8 or 9, he already came up to her shoulders. That's going to be me. I'm going to completely lose whatever air of authority I might have had as a mother by the time my child is 11 because they will outgrow me. And as Ginny McKinney always said: "It's funny because it's true!"

Wow. I'm definately having a bad hair day. This static-cling mane is being put into a ponytail straight away!
Posted by Hello
This is my hair today.

Last night I painted my fingernails what I have officially dubbed "Timoni Purple" because the color looked so perfect and true on her fingernails (It's that same purple you wore a week ago, Timoni). I've decided to try and make my nails look fresh and neat once a week. Otherwise they look grody, and we can't have that now, can we? Certainly not!... I have to impress the dudes...

In my infinate just-had-surgery boredom I began a book I bought ages ago at a library book sale but never got around to readin. It's Amy Tan's the Bonesetter's daughter, and it's quite good so far. Granted I'm only on page 60 out of about 400, so I'm definately aware that it could go downhill quickly. But whatevs, I'm not concerned.

I am, however, concerned about my test tomorrow!!! There is so much information. I have to know a gazillion things about various fibers - some simple like cotton, others complex like polyeurethane vinyl - and I'm starting to panic. AAAH. Not to mention random stuff like what a beater does on a loom (ok, actually, that's an easy one) and what kinds of fibers we know for sure existed in 4000 BC. And what the cellulosic origin of linen is. So much stuff, so little time to learn it in!

And off I skip to Common Grounds :)

My surgeon's awesome

This is my favorite put-the-patient-at-ease quote ever!

My (male) Anesthesiologist: I'm sorry I keep poking around in your arm. It's just that I can't find a vein. Dr. Martin, look at how thin her veins are!

Dr. Martin (female): WOW! Those are tiny veins.

Marianne: I'm sorry! I can't help it. Everything about me is tiny.

Dr. Martin: Yeah... except for your "you-know-what"...

Anesthesiologist: You must me talking about her brains.

Nicklecrap... er... I mean NickleBACK

You guys have G-O-T to listen to this. I'm not kidding. This is the most amazing and awful at-the-same-time thing I've heard in a long time! Read the story that goes along with it, and then listen to the MP3. You'll pee your pants.

How 'bout that snow?

I woke up early this morning to a phone call from the Pre-Operative Center at VA. Hospital Center. Being very groggy I mumbled "hekjfgsjfh...?" (meaning hello). They told me that since my surgery is tomorrow I needed to come in immediately and get some last minute bloodwork done. So up I hopped, pulled on some sweatpants and a baseball hat, and drove to the hospital. Right before I left, however, I checked to see if we still had school. My hopes for classes being canceled were slim-to-none because although there was a light covering of snow on the ground, the streets just looked like it'd been raining.

But Hoorah! Classes were cancelled for the day!! I have only had to go to ONE class this week! How cool is that?? If you can't deduce for yourself, let me tell you: Pretty darn cool. My question, however, is this:

How is it that our nation's capital - arguably the single most powerful city on the earth - is shut down by 1/2 inch of snow? It's a mystery.

Anyways... so tomorrow morning I head in to have my INTRADUCTAL PAPILLOMA removed. It'll take a few hours mainly because I'll have to wake up from the anesthesia. That's always fun, right? I remember when I used to work at a veterinarian's office, and I'd watch the dogs wake up, drooling all over themselves, twitching, struggling to get control of their muscles... Eww... I'm glad I'm not eating right now because I have this one specific memory of a particularly drool-filled golden retriever that's playing in my head.

My day today has been significantly less productive than yesterday. I did lots of stuff yesterday because I figured it was my only day off, but now that I was suddenly handed all of this free time I'm not quite sure what to do with myself. And so the day has passed me by without me actually acheiving much of anything. What a sad, sad story :)

I do intend to go for a walk in the snow tonight though, if anyone close enough to walk cares to join me (**ahem** - Drea, Chris, Geoff, or Mari...). The night after a snow is always wonderful. It's so quiet and everything looks so clean. Tonight will be especially pretty because last night was a full moon (so it'll be bright).

Robocop 2 is on UPN 20 on Saturday!

Here, I know I'm double posting, but I know you've been wondering, so here's what I did with my day off:

- woke up at 10:00
- weighed myself (119 pounds)
- called the veterinarian to see how much it costs to have my rabbit's teeth filed down ($21)
- called Dell to see how much it'll cost to fix my stupid laptop ($256)
- vacuumed our house. Our WHOLE house. Yikes...
- went to the bank to deposit 3 paychecks
- met Mae King for a walk & talk
- e-mailed a whole bunch of people
- payed some bills
- played a couple of games of online canasta
-went back to the bank to pick up my driver's lisence, which I left there the first time I was at the bank today
- had Bible study at my house
- ate enough junk food to believe that when I wake up tomorrow I can tell you that I now weigh 120 pounds again
-talked to Drea on the phone
- updated my blog
- cleaned some stuff around the house
- made my room messier than before
- DIDN'T make my bed (but then again, do I ever?)
- turned on random lights in the Shomaker's house to prevent burglary while they are away.

My, my, my, I live such an exciting life.

Enhance your web-viewing experience: Only view the BEST.

Well I like this website. It's actually an awards site with links to well designed websites. Some of the award winners (for example: an Abercrombie and Fitch website) were annoying to me, but others (such as all of the past winners in the "Arts" category) were pretty darn sweet. And of course, you have a string of practical, but not incredibly interesting sites, like this random realtor's webpage.

One of the featured sites, which you absolutely must check out (if only to watch a dancing Nixon bobble-head) is: http://www.gigapixelcreative.com/. It's got some very cool images on it... and like I said, a dancing Nixon bobble-head.

Marianne's quote of the day

(as taken from my e-mail to Chris)

"Why is it called spam? I always though Spam was kind of endearing even though I don't really want to ingest a lot of it. What is the relation between war-time meat rations and unwanted cyber messages?"

Girls and boys

Timoni, Garth and I went to KATSUCON today! It was fab, my friends. Fab. We got to watch 2 hours of this anime called "Full Metal Alchemist", which has got me totally hooked, and now I want to log onto Amazon.com and buy everything they have... well actually, only DVDs, even if they had other stuff related to it, because I be a po grad student.

The three of us noticed, I must say, that there is a reason that anime fans have a bad rap. Its because many of them ARE unkempt and lacking in social skills... Especially painful to watch were a few particular people trying to dance onstage before they gave out music video awards. Ack. It made me embarassed for everyone in the room, including myself, to have witnessed such atrocity. We observed also that Timoni and I were quite possibly two of the cutest/most normal chicks there... which doesn't make everyone ugly, because we ARE cute, but it doesn't pay anyone a huge compliment either.

Timoni and I were planning to go to a "Law School Prom" afterwards with this guy Eric who she knows, but we were both pooped when we got home, so it was a no-go. Our conversation about it went something like this:

Me: so do YOU want to go?
Timoni: I dunno, do you?
Me: Uh... I asked you first...
Timoni: Well, I'm tired...
Both: Let's not go.

Instead I will spend my evening in a state of semi-hibernation at home, in my sweatpants, cleaning up my house before my mom and dad return from out of town. Hoorah for cleaning!!

And lastly, some wise words from Timoni's blog:
"I don't think most people would say they need someone else to be complete, but everybody kind of feels they need someone to be satisfied."

I think this is kind of true, eh?

Wow, this website is for real...

I done got myself a blog

Welcome to my new "Blog", everyone! (I really don't like calling it a blog. Who thought up that name anyways, and does it actually mean something, or is it just another internet word designed to make people over the age of 40 feel like they've lost touch with the english language?) I used to do LiveJournal when I was in Japan, but I hadn't updated it for almost a year and figured I might as well start from scratch.

I'm baking cake right now. Or as Pedro says, I'm "building" a cake. I love making cake, but I think it's because I like licking the pans. My mom tells me stories of how the first time I ever actually finished a meal wasn't until I was 9 or something, but I think that's just because it wasn't until I was 9 that I realized you can make entire meals out of sugar. Such as ice cream. When eaten in enough bulk ice cream can be a very filling meal... no, I jest. I haven't done that since college. And I'm the first to admit it was anything but nutritious. I do love sweets though.
